To Foul or Not to Foul?

Zman is really coming along with basketball this year. He is beginning to come out of his shell and really participate. His nature is still so sweet that he doesn't want to hurt anyone else's feelings so he isn't too competitive yet... but we're working on it! I'm not a very good shot and my camera has a mind of it's own but this is Zman making a basket. You'll have to take my word for it. I know.

I don't get upset when I watch these games. These kids are too young to really know the rules of the game (for the most part). However, this past game was a little different. Notice in this picture the black wrist bands on Zman, as well as the black wrist bands on the boy gaurding him. Those are there because in Upward, you can only play man to man defense... meaning, each child is "assigned" someone to gaurd for that period and cannot leave their man to make other plays against other players. These guys are so young, they use the wrist bands to make sure they don't get confused as to who they are guarding.
NOW... see the GREEN wrist band coming in to take the ball away from my newly budding basketball star??? Uh Huh! That's right. Against the rules. Not fair. FOUL!!! We endured this agressive, illegal behavior for THREE periods before the refs starting calling it.
Fortunately, the kids on our team are not well versed on the rules of the game so they did not realize how unfairly they were being treated. They were just glad to have played. They were just glad to get their stars for best offense or defense or Most Christ-Like. They were just glad to get their snack afterward. I'm just glad none of the parents (myself included) did anything to take that away from them.
In the end, I guess it turned out to be no harm, no foul.

Hee hee....just wait until they get to middle school/high school ball. Tanner has been elbowed, cut from someone's teeth, stomped on and etc.....

The boys games I see are more like football than basketball. There's jumping, running, pushing, falling, sliding, grunting, crying, bleeding...and I'm talking about 1st & 2nd grade! Hang in there! Great pictures!

That's funny Myrna! And probably true! I'll have to pay closer attention at J's games but, A doesn't allow for that often! :o)

We have had a few instances of tackle basketball. Zman is working too hard to get the Most Christ-like star to be in on that action. He's the one running, not for the ball, but to help someone from the opposite team up after a fall. That's my boy!!!
