Now.... Let's talk about Pizza Buffets

So we've talked about germs in bathrooms and on floors.

On shoes, bags, paws, and feet.

Let's talk about buffets... particularly, pizza buffets.

It was Therapy Thursday and we were out to lunch with Suzan and the kids.

We went to Double Dave's.

It was crazy busy! PACKED! Full house!

We almost didn't get a table.

Almost. After loading our plates, we sat down to eat.

Just coming from gymnastics, we had already sanitized our hands. (Hands and feet sharing that gym floor and equipment is a whole other blog post on germs.... another day.)

As I settled in to eat, I scanned the room to see with whom I was breaking bread.

There were lots of men.

Lots of big men.

Lots of big men with working clothes on... like plumbers and construction workers and electricians and AC workers and mechanics... Lots of men.... who work.... really hard.... with their hands.

Then I watched as they, too, filled their plates with pizza...

From the buffet...

Using the same handles I used...

To get my pizza....

From the buffet....

And then I realized...

We all used the same handles.

And then

We all sat down and used our HANDS (that touched the community handles) to eat our pizza!

Now, this brings us back to the question I asked in the last post...

Do you think all the people in that restaurant... working men, non-working men, women, kids....

Do you think they ALL use the same hand washing/sanitizing practices that you do???

And then we share the handles...

And then we eat with our hands.

ICK!

Don't get me wrong...

You'll still see me at Double Dave's

Eating pizza

From the buffet that everyone else is eating from.

I just might have a pump of sanitizer sitting next to me at my table...

And I'll be happy to share!

Ewwww!!! I'm never eating out again!!! Eating out is a scary thing! You never know about those back in the kitchen handling your food!
You're thinking too much in your late stage! Hurry baby!

Gross? Yes. But exposing your body to (some) germs can be good for you... there's something out there called the "hygeine hypothesis." And besides, if you don't want to have to cook at home all the time, then you're gonna have to get past the germs on the pizza serving spatula! I just can't think about it when we go to a buffet... I might try using a napkin to hold the spatula the next time I go!!

I agree, Shan... and I have heard about the recent studies that all the antibacterial stuff is actually doing us an injustice since we are inhibiting our bodies from developing a resistance to those germs... and the germs are just getting "stronger" learning how to survive despite the antibacterial stuff. I really do think about this stuff but I don't let it freak me out... not too much, anyway. Otherwise, you are right, I'd never eat out or even leave my house or even let my kids play on the floor. (But I do... really... they are sprawled out on the floor as we speak!) Really, these posts are more for fun... picking on myself and how my ridiculous brain works. The germs on the spatula are not my big concern... it's the fact that after we touch the spatula, we eat with our hands. That really does give me the heeby-geebies. And Becky, I really have to use self control and NOT think about those preparing our food... especially in fast food. I console myself by thinking that the germs are killed by the temperature at which the food is cooked. And live blissfully in ignorance... Thanks for laughing with me (and maybe at me a little too!)

Geez Alice...thanks a lot..now I'll think about this EVERY time I go ANYWHERE. I wasn't a germaphobe until now. When's baby due again? :) Alex can't stand buffets. We'll go every now and then, but he goes reluctantly. He says he's seen too many people get sick at buffets, from overeating most likely.

Hi Alice!
Just checkin' on ya and have a quote for you regarding all of this germ talk. Larry the Cable guy says,
"Support bacteria. It's the only culture some people have!"

I thought of you immediately upon reading this!! :o)
